The
Fourth Step: Public Acknowledgment of Participation and Commitment and
Final Contacts
- Use
Advertisements To Spread The Word And Inspire The Clergy and Their
Congregations
The
biggest single expense by Transplant for Life in the entire National
Donor Sabbath campaign resulted from the placement of an advertisement
in the Jewish Journal, a Jewish community newspaper covering most
of Southern California. We discovered that the mere mention of relating
to the public that the names of the synagogues and their clergy
was one key reason our campaign was not just a little successful,
but very successful. The fact that all of the NDS participants would
be made known added a significant inducement to receiving affirmative
responses from a number of clergy. Of course, as seen in the SECOND
PRIORITY FAX, notification of a deadline and the upcoming presence
in the media of the campaign added to the impetus to respond in
a timely matter.

- Contact
and Receive Cooperation From The Media
In
retrospect we realized that working with the media can be jsut as
effective as placing an advertisement (although if you have the funds,
an advertisement is very effective in addition to public relations
work with the media). In subsequent years we did, and the results
were most satisfying. As stated in the Guidelines and Resource Kit
prepared by the Division of Transplantation, Dept of Health and Human
Services, "the media are critically important for a successful
National Donor Sabbath. Not only do most major newspapers have a religion
editor, but there are a variety of local religious newspapers, radio
stations, and television shows that can be contacted for support".
We are prepared to direct you, based on our experience, as to the
best tips for working with the media, including information that can
be used to create the opportunities for your message.

Once the "word
is out" via stories in the media or your advertisement, give
clergy one more chance to participate. By then the legitimacy of
your efforts will be well established, and most of the "hold
outs" remaining will welcome the opportunity to partipate.
We suggest sending them a final fax and giving them a final phone
call. Again, very few clergy will actually object to participating,
but instead will be distracted by other other matters, and will
eventually acknowledge and honor your persistence.
